Checking In and the first few days in Albuquerque

Well my last post was more popular than I expected it would be so I'm very happy and I thought I would write another one covering the my time in Albuquerque so far up to the orientation meeting I had today. Once again hope you enjoy. Hit the jump to read more.

So where I left off last time I had just checked into my hotel for the weekend before I could move into university accommodation. The weekend was mainly spent exploring downtown Albuquerque where I managed to walk a short way along the famous historic route 66 which runs through the centre of the city. The rest of the time was either spent trying to sort out my phone or relaxing by the pool with my book. On Sunday evening I visited a restaurant across the road which specialised in barbecued meat which you ordered by the half pound and then constructed your own sandwiches with the provided sauces and salad.  I chose the beef brisket and lead to one of the best couple of sandwich's I had had in a while.

After this I tuned into NBC's coverage of the closing ceremony which was amusing as they tried to make sense of all the references like Del-Boy and Rodney dressed as Batman and Robin. Overall though it was very enjoyable despite the ridiculous amount of adverts even the though the next show was completely ad-free (a comedy with a monkey doctor that wasn't at all funny).

The next day I finally got to check into the university and my accommodation. This took a good couple of hours as I wondered about the campus, bag in tow trying to work out to go. Eventually I was all signed in and had luckily got my first choice of accommodation as opposed to my last chance which I was originally told I was in. The flat that I got put in sleeps six, of which I have only met one so far,  and has a fully furnished kitchen which means that I will be able to cook proper meals. This day I also met up with my friends from Exeter and went with them to the Frontier restaurant which has been featured on Man Vs Food as one of the best student restaurants is Albuquerque.

This week I have also learnt why it is Americans learn to drive at such a young age. They do it because nothing of any use is ever within walking distance. I discovered this when trying to bring my shopping back from Wal-Mart in the blaring heat and in the end having to take the bus.

Today I have had my international students orientation meeting which lasted 7 hours and was immensely dull as they tried to cover everything form Visas to campus societies.

This concludes my second post, I hope you enjoyed reading it again, once again any comments on how to improve are welcome. Tomorrow I am going on a trip up to the top of the mountain featured in the background of one of the pictures in my last post so I may post some pictures up here in a couple of days.

Thanks for reading,
Sam
